Thesis
Every company already has a decision model. It lives in memos, Slack threads, CRM notes, legal footnotes, and the heads of people who leave. Custom GPTs exist to make that model callable — so the answer an operator gets at 11pm matches the judgment the company would defend at noon.
Heuman Labs treats a custom GPT as an institutional interface: grounded in approved corpora, wired to the systems that hold live truth, constrained by guardrails, and evaluated against the tone and refusal behaviour the brand actually wants — not the average of the open web.
What a custom GPT is
A custom GPT is a purpose-built assistant with a bounded job: answer, draft, retrieve, or orchestrate within a domain the enterprise owns. It may speak to executives, support agents, sales teams, or operators — but it does not pretend to know what it was never given.
The research problem is not “make it sound smart.” It is epistemic honesty under product pressure: cite or refuse; prefer systems of record over rumour; separate house style from house facts; and keep tool use from becoming silent mutation of customer state without authority.
We compose five primitives — RAG, tools, guardrails, tone, and eval — into a surface that feels like one product and fails like a controlled system.
Grounding & retrieval
Grounding is how institutional knowledge enters the context window without becoming folklore. Retrieval is not a checkbox; it is a design of corpus, chunking, authority, and freshness.
RAG
Provides — Retrieve approved passages, policies, and artefacts before generation — with attribution paths operators can audit.
Best at — Knowledge that changes slower than chat, faster than tribal memory.
Corpus design
Provides — Curated collections with ownership, retention, and exclusion of draft or privileged material.
Best at — Enterprises where the wrong PDF in the index is a compliance event.
Live tools
Provides — Read (and, when gated, write) against CRM, billing, docs, and internal APIs for facts that must not be stale.
Best at — Questions whose correct answer changed after the last embedding job.
Hybrid memory
Provides — Session context plus durable preferences — without promoting chat history into policy.
Best at — Assistants that should remember the account, not invent a new company each turn.
Surfaces we design
Custom GPTs earn their keep on specific desks. We research and ship surfaces tied to workflows — not a single corporate chatbot that tries to be everyone's intern.
Executive brief assistants
Serves — Compress portfolio, risk, and operating signals into board-ready language with sources.
Best at — Leaders who need fidelity and brevity more than conversational theatre.
Operator copilots
Serves — Answer process questions, draft next steps, and pull account context mid-workflow.
Best at — Support, success, and ops teams drowning in tribal how-to.
Revenue assistants
Serves — Ground talk tracks, objection handling, and account history in approved playbooks.
Best at — Sales motions where improvisation without doctrine burns trust.
Policy & compliance guides
Serves — Retrieve and explain internal policy with clear scope and escalation paths.
Best at — Domains where a wrong answer is not merely inconvenient.
Knowledge routers
Serves — Point humans to the owning system, owner, or document instead of paraphrasing everything.
Best at — Large enterprises where knowing where truth lives is half the job.
Guardrails, tone & eval
Guardrails define what the assistant may never do. Tone defines how it should sound when it may. Eval defines whether both still hold next quarter.
Guardrails
Enforces — Topic bans, PII handling, tool allow-lists, and refusal patterns that survive prompt pressure.
Best at — Regulated and brand-sensitive environments that cannot rely on hope.
Tone
Encodes — House voice, formality, and escalation language derived from real artefacts — not generic ‘professional’.
Best at — Companies whose written culture is part of the product.
Eval
Measures — Groundedness, citation validity, refusal correctness, tone drift, and tool-success rates.
Best at — Catching silent degradation when models, corpora, or policies change.
How Heuman Labs builds them
Research-first, deployment-honest. We sit with the judgment owners — the people whose signatures already stand behind decisions — and encode what they already do.
- 01Name the desk, the questions that burn time, and the answers that must never be improvised.
- 02Curate corpus and live tools; separate facts that embed from facts that must be fetched.
- 03Draft system behaviour, tone pack, and refusal map with legal and brand review.
- 04Shadow with real tickets or briefs; score groundedness and override reasons.
- 05Ship behind access control; monitor drift, citations, and tool errors in production.
- 06Expand corpus and surfaces only after the first assistant earns institutional trust.
Where repetitive execution dominates, we hand off to Agentic Business Optimisation — assistants reason; agents close loops.
Enterprise engagement
We propose a bounded custom-GPT engagement that leaves a production assistant with owners, eval, and a change process — not a prompt file in a shared drive.
Typical shape: map the judgment surface and risk profile → stand up one flagship assistant (often operator or executive) → validate on held-out hard cases → wire SSO and logging → publish an ownership model for corpus updates → grow the catalog once the first surface is trusted.
Judgment in the stack
Custom GPTs sit upstream and alongside the rest of the research stack. Predictive Intelligence scores what is likely; Decision Intelligence chooses what to do; agents execute; custom GPTs keep how this company thinks available to the humans who remain in the loop.
Heuman Labs designs them as a coherent system — so foresight, policy, automation, and institutional judgment reinforce each other instead of competing as disconnected tools.
